The US has decided to allow 20,000 more H1-b visas specifically for students graduating from a US university with a Masters or PhD. An H1-B visa is what allows a non US citizen to work in the US. It is used extensively for hi-tech workers. http://www.h1base.com/page.asp?id=340
This is a no-brainer! Why wouldn't we want all people who are educated in the US to stay in the US if they can find jobs? Most schools are funded with tax payer money. So we pay for a students education and then don't let them stay here and work and pay taxes?? Plus, the US can not get enough students to enter engineering programs anyway. A very larger % of engineering grad students are not from the US. Would we rather these very intelligent hard working people go work in another country after being educated here?
Opponents of allowing H1-B visas argue that these visas take away jobs for US citizens. Even if you agree with this, which I don't, it is only for a short period of time. If companies can not find workers at an affordable wage, then they will go elsewhere to find employees i.e. off-shoring. Making laws to prevent off-shoring will just cause US companies to wither while international companies will flourish.
This is also a patriotic issue for me. This country was built by hardworking intelligent "foreigners". Most everyone in this country is a descendant of hardworking people who came here to provide a better life for their families. I believe stopping this tradition will cause our society to crumble. Plus, don't we want as many hardworking intelligent people as we can get paying taxes and being in our communities. These are the types of people I want sending their kids to school with my kids. I also find new food, music, movies, ideas, etc to be a huge bonus. Let all people who can find a job come and experience the American Dream.
